Unsure About the English Language Requirement?
On this page you will find the 5 English language requirements used by the Department of Home Affairs and how to prove you have the English score needed for your visa.
Depending on your visa, you will have to prove you have either functional English, vocational English, competent English, proficient English or Superior English.

Functional English
This test scores are needed if you are required to prove you have functional English
You can also show you have functional English if:
- you hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland
- you have been assessed by a service provider of the Adult Migration English Program (AMEP)
- you have completed all years of primary education and a minimum of 3 years of secondary education in or outside Australia where all instructions were in English
- you have completed a minimum of 5 years of secondary education in or outside Australia where all instructions were in English
- you have completed at least 1 year of full-time study or equivalent part-time study towards a degree/diploma/associate diploma in Australia and all instructions were in English
- you have completed a degree/diploma/trade certificate with at least 2 years of full-time study/training in or outside Australia where all instructions were in English
Vocational English
This test scores are needed if you are required to prove you have vocational English.
If you don’t have the above scores, you can prove you have vocational English if you have:
- you hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland

Competent English
The above test scores are needed if you are required to prove you have competent English.

- you hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland
Proficient English
The above test scores are needed if you are required to prove you have proficient English.
Superior English
The above test scores are needed if you are required to prove you have superior English.
