On 7 August 2025, four updated migration instruments introduced new English language test providers and made adjustments to existing test names and requirements. These changes reflect new Deeds of Agreement between the Department of Home Affairs and test providers.
New English Test Providers Added:
The following providers are now formally recognised across the updated instruments:
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program – General (CELPIP General)
- LANGUAGECERT Academic Test (LANGUAGECERT Academic)
- Michigan English Test (MET)
Terminology Updates:
- Instruments now specify both IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.
- The Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) test has been updated to Cambridge Advanced Test (C1 Advanced).
These changes have been applied consistently to ensure clarity and alignment with international testing standards.
Application
- All four instruments commenced on 7 August 2025.
- They apply to applications lodged on or after 7 August 2025.
- Saving provisions exist across instruments to recognise valid test results undertaken before commencement, provided they meet prior score requirements.
- These updates broaden the choice of English language tests available to visa applicants and improve clarity in assessing English proficiency for Australian migration purposes.
